Known as The Temperance Card in most Tarot Card Reading Decks.
The Art card is also the number XIV (14) in the Tarot Deck System.
In numerology, the number 14 is a combination of the number 1 (Beginning) and the number 4 (Manifestation).
Cards with dual numbers or double digits (anything past the number 9, represents two things:
Its base single number, for instance 1, paired with another number, such as 4.
A combination of the two numbers, then take on a Higher meaning.
While the number 1 represents beginnings, the number 10 is a brand new beginning but at a higher level.
As in the case when paired with 0 which represents Completion
The number 0 is a symbol of a completed cycle. A Circle.
With that said, The Art Card is then a Higher Major Arcana card.
But not just that.
It represents New Beginnings and Manifestations but on a Higher level.
Additionally, we can combine the two numbers together (and break it down) to come up with its base number.
Which in this case is the number 5.
When something moves past its initial manifestation state, to its next iteration or incarnation, it is changing.
In Alchemy, the purpose is to take an element and break it down to its base core.
It’s purest form.
Through the process of fire (both symbolic and physical) an element is reduced to its purest form.
Numerology is no different.
If that is the case, then The Art Card represents the ability to begin anew but with manifestation in mind.
The ability to start over and manifest one’s Wishes, Acts or Will more quickly or instantly.
To become more adept or more proficient at the Higher arts.
Hence, The Art Card.
Aleister Crowley once called Alchemy and High Magick, “The Art of all Arts”.
And rightfully so.
Rising and falling.
Waxing and Waning.
Learning the intricacies of time within the most minute of moments, hours of the day, days of the week, weeks in months and months in a year.
And at the end of the year, we start all over.
We crave learning and the understanding of Time.
Our aim is to understand the movement of one moment to the next moment (or from one astrological time to the next).
We strive to understand the changes in the seasons which gives us first-hand experience at being able to grasp those unseen cycles and mysteries of life (both inside and outside of us).
It gives us power.
It gives us foresight.
It gives us control.
Before we can understand what a card means, we must understand it’s numbered order in the Tarot.
Only then can we go on to understand it’s underlying meaning.
Symbology, when paired with the numbered order of a card, gives it more emphasis and impact.
It can also gives us a tool or system from which we may confirm the value and validity of the Cards meaning.
Before we can begin to interpret the meaning of the card, we must have a focal point.
The meaning behind The Art card is both simple and yet, also complex.
In its simplest form, it represents the blending of the Right (Severity), the Left (Mercy) combined with the Middle (The Middle Path).
The Art Card is essentially an Alchemy card.
The alchemy process is combining, this and that to form something new.
Combining the past, with the present to form the future.
Or, combining Chaos with Order to form a new Understanding.
In The Art Card, we see many dualistic symbols.
First, at the bottom of the Art Card, we see two creatures (or Dragons)
One creature is White like Ice (Mercy).
While the other is Red like Fire (Severity).
However, the two creatures or Dragons are swapped or on opposite sides, according to the Middle Pillar.
Why are they swapped?
The left side of the brain is responsible for controlling the right side of the body.
It also performs tasks that have to do with logic, such as in science and mathematics.
On the other hand, the right hemisphere coordinates the left side of the body, and performs tasks that have do with creativity and the arts.
We also see the figure in the card holding bolts of Fire in the right hand (Severity) and ice in the left hand (Mercy).
As we move up the card, we also see two figures.
One Black and One White.
However, the two figures are combined or merged as one.
They are two, yet the One.
Two sides of the same.
At the very bottom of the card, there is a cauldron.
The cauldron is between the both sets of characters in the card.
The cauldron is the link, or the symbiosis between the two sets of figures in the card.
The cauldron is the container which unites them.
The cauldron is symbolic of the Cup (or the Container).
Cups in the Tarot usually symbolize something that holds liquid (usually the elemental water).
But in this case, it is the liquid that dissolves.
Remember alchemy is the process of breaking down elements and materials into their purest and simplest form.
Once you have this pure element, you can then create something new.
It is akin to the phoenix burning up and then being reborn from its ashes.
The roman number IXV is expressed in the following numerical formula: 14 = 5 or 1 + 4 =5
1 = Beginnings
4 = Manifestations
5 = Changes
We see the astrological sign for Sagittarius on the cauldron.
Sagittarius is also one of the 4 elemental signs for Fire.
Elemental Fire, when mixed with the liquid (Elemental Water) creates steam (Elemental Wind).
Even though Sagittarius is a fire sign, it is also the Astrological sign for the Great Archer.
The skilled archer must use his mind in order to learn the mastery of being a great bowman.
The steam (wind) rising from the cauldron carries with it the Archers Arrow.
Flinging itself from out of the newly created formula (liquid), upwards and in between the dual Creatures and Figures.
The arrow is headed upwards, towards the head, mind or the third eye of the dual black and white figure.
The Art Card is about mastery of craft or skill.
It is the ability to set one’s mind on a particular task and produce a needed effect with a high degree of accuracy.
It is the ultimate Magic, Ritual, Meditation or Divine Intuition which produces a needed effect.
That needed effect can be as simple as answering a question the querent might have, to calling forth energies to confirm or dispel something the querent is wanting to know or learn.
